Instagram Story Reply Automation: Turn Story Replies into Leads
Story replies land in DMs, which makes them the warmest message on Instagram. How story reply automation works, what to trigger on, and what to send back.
A reply to a story is different from a comment. It is private, it arrives in your DMs, and the person sending it chose to start a one-to-one conversation. On most accounts story replies are the warmest messages that arrive all day and the ones most likely to be missed, because they land between everything else in the inbox and disappear from view when the story does.
Story reply automation answers them the moment they land. Here is how it works, what to trigger on, and how to keep it from feeling like a vending machine.
What a story reply actually is
When someone replies to your story, Instagram sends the reply to your inbox as a DM, with the story attached as context. To the Meta API that is a message event with a story reference. That is what makes it automatable: the reply arrives through the same official channel as any other DM, so a tool connected through the Graph API can read it, match it, and respond.
Two things follow from this. Story reply automation only works for Business or Creator accounts, because personal accounts are not exposed through the API. And it works whether or not the reply contains a keyword, which is the difference from comment automation.
The two kinds of trigger
Any reply to a specific story. Post a story with a call to action ("reply DEAL for the code", "reply if you want the link") and answer every reply to that story with the thing you promised. This is the classic use, and it converts because the promise and the delivery are seconds apart.
Keyword replies to any story. Match a word or phrase ("price", "link", "book") across all your stories, so a standing offer keeps working without a new automation per story. Match loosely on purpose, since people type "LINK pls" and "link?" and "Link" and mean the same thing.
In Arolead both are a story-reply trigger on an automation. Pick the story or the keyword, write the reply, and the automation runs on every matching message.
What to send back
The reply should finish the thought the story started, not open a new one.
- Link stories: send the link, one line of context, and nothing else.
- Offer stories: send the code and the expiry. Scarcity that is true works; scarcity that is invented gets screenshotted.
- Question stories ("what should I cover next?"): thank them, ask one follow-up, and let the bot hand off to you for the reply that needs a human.
- Product stories: answer the question they are most likely to ask next, usually price or availability, and offer to hold one.
Keep the first reply short. A wall of text in response to a two-word story reply reads as automated even when the content is good.
Turn the reply into a lead
This is the step most story automation skips. The person who replied gave you their handle and their interest. In Arolead every first inbound message creates a lead automatically, tagged with the automation that caught it, so a "reply DEAL" story fills a segment you can broadcast to later and a stage you can work through. The lead pipeline is covered in how to turn Instagram DMs into a CRM pipeline.
Keep it inside Instagram's rules
Story replies open a normal DM conversation, and Instagram's messaging window applies: you can reply freely for 24 hours after their last message, and after that you need them to message again. Answer inside the window, do not send follow-ups to people who never replied, and do not use a story reply as a pretext to add someone to a list they did not ask to join. Automation that respects the window looks like a fast human. Automation that ignores it looks like spam and gets reported as such.
A setup that works
- Post a story with one clear ask and one keyword.
- Create a story-reply automation on that story, matching loosely on the keyword.
- Write a two-line reply that delivers the promise.
- Add a branch for anything that is not the keyword: a short "thanks, I'll reply personally" and a handoff to you.
- Check the lead list the next morning and tag the ones worth a follow-up.
Story automation is not part of Arolead's free plan. Comment-to-DM automation is, and the plan comparison lists exactly which tiers include story triggers.
